ABSTRACT

Wordsworth, Peter Bell (1819); Monthly Review, 2nd Series, LXXXIX (Aug. 1819), 419–422. The attack on Wordsworth in the Monthly, as in many periodicals, crescendos in this review of Peter Bell and The Waggoner. The stanza quoted at the end of this review, though excised from later editions of Peter Bell, has gained a kind of immortality as the epigraph of Shelley’s Peter Bell the Third.
