ABSTRACT

The PHILANTHROPIST; or, Repository for Hints and Suggestions Calculated to Promote the Comfort and Happiness of Man had an erratic and itinerant history because it was the hobby of a single individual. The periodical began in London in 1811, continued through 1815, was discontinued 1816–1817, and revived 1818–1819; this first series totaled seven volumes. From 1825 through 1830 seventeen more numbers appeared at irregular intervals, constituting New Series, volumes I-II. The Philanthropist disappeared, only to revive once more at Lindfield, Sussex, from 1835 through 1842 as Lindfield Reporter; or, Philanthropic Magazine.
