ABSTRACT

The post-occupancy evaluation found the Wilkinson Architecture Building design to be outdated and oppressive, not providing amenity for the social interactions, informal dialogue, and debate yearned for in any learning and creative environment. Social interaction is an important part of how knowledge is tranferred, professional identity developed, and skill nurtured, and as such is an important component in the evaluation and design of any learning and creative organization. Built in three stages beginning in 1984, the five-story Wilkinson Building at the University of Sydney is home to the Faculty of Architecture, a 1500-student, multi-disciplinary faculty including architecture, urban and regional planning, urban design, design computing, digital media, environment-behavior studies, facilities management, and six other environmental design disciplines.
