ABSTRACT
Post-occupancy evaluations of architecture schools, such as those in this book, have the purpose not of establishing universal solutions, but rather of allowing designers to predict consequences resulting from their design decisions. In Berlin, Schinkel designed a building for the Bauakademie that would unite the school that was "scattered in makeshift quarters" into one monumental building. The University of Pennsylvania began a program in architecture in 1890, emphasizing fine arts; in 1903, Philippe Cret, as head of the department, brought the strong tradition of the beaux arts to Penn. The Dessau Bauhaus's first large building characterized the Modern Movement's new conception of form, space, and use of modern materials. Architecture schools had their origin in the United States after the Civil War with the establishment of the Tenth Street Atelier in New York. 1963 Art and Architecture Building, designed by Paul Rudolph.
