ABSTRACT
Trust plays an important role in research groups, scientific communities, and the relations these communities have with the society. The chapter focuses on the question of what can ground rational epistemic trust within and in science. Trust is epistemic when it provides epistemic justification for one’s beliefs, and epistemic trust is rational when it is based on evidence of the right kind and amount. The chapter discusses various approaches to two questions: What can ground rational epistemic trust in an individual scientist? What can ground rational trust in (or reliance on) the social practices of scientific communities and the institutions of science?
