ABSTRACT

Hockey requires multiple repeated sprints and changes of direction just as most team sports do. However, readers will appreciate that there are multiple unique movement patterns and running demands to hockey that take place as a consequence of the demand of hitting a ball and rolling substitutions. Additionally, the dense tournament structure at international level requires athletes to perform repeated high intensity efforts day after day. Readers will learn about the periodization strategies required to meet this, which centers on an understanding of strength, fitness and recovery interventions. This chapter will provide readers with training programmes and illustrations that are informative to those working in the high performance sector of field hockey.
