ABSTRACT

Cricket is a unique sport that involves many facets due to the differing player positions and demand of the three formats, which include T20 matches (20 overs per side), one day (50 overs per side) and multiple day matches (up to 5 days). In all formats the skills needed are similar but due to the varying demands of the shorter and longer formats, the intensity and durations are markedly different, which will in turn have an impact on how to prepare and program your cricket athlete. Understanding the biomechanical and physiological demands as well as the injury prevalence of the game is key to prescribing an effective strength and conditioning program. Cricketers will sometimes only play 1–2 formats; however, the greater challenge lies in the fact that there are many that play all three formats in a busy schedule that can last all year round.
