ABSTRACT

Netball is an intermittent sport with rapid accelerations, decelerations, changes of direction and jumps; it is explosive, repetitive and tactical in nature. It is only played professionally by females. This chapter will describe the athletic demands of netball and specific injury risk factors associated with the sport. Knowing this information, the chapter will then go on to propose a framework to help guide programming, planning and decision making when devising an individual athletic plan. The framework is driven by:

Understanding the performance needs of the sport, group, team and individual athlete.

Increasing understanding and insight into the athlete’s strengths and key areas for development in the sport specific context.

Understanding the athlete’s physical profile to improve training direction within the context of the coach’s philosophy.
