ABSTRACT

Since Taekwondo’s introduction into the Sydney Olympics in 2000, the sport has gone through huge developments in both the way that competition and training is performed. As a result the physical development of Taekwondo players has had develop too, as not only the level and frequency of competitions has increased, but the tactical demands have changed. Modern day Taekwondo is a combat sport characterised by chaotic environments and high intensity efforts that presents both technical and tactical challenges for the athletes. The majority of scored points come from kicks to the body and head and so the conditioning programme has to focus on improving lower body strength and power, whilst ensuring that the athletes have sufficient range of motion to safely reach the opponent’s head. They also need to be able to repeat these actions over the course of a full day of competitions or week of training.
