ABSTRACT

Tennis is a truly global sport with many unique features that provides the strength and conditioning practitioner with a multitude of challenges. This chapter aims to provide the reader with a clear evaluation of up to date literature surrounding the demands of the sport, the injury prevalence and typical injuries common to the sport. It will also detail the current physiological testing and screening procedures from the British Lawn Tennis Association, before finally detailing and providing examples of a periodised macro cycle. An example of a typical week’s training schedule for a professional player is provided along with an example of a travel programme for when players are away from their training facility and have limited access to equipment. These examples have been produced by the authors, who have worked within the elite performance programmes for the British LTA and also the New Zealand LTA for a number of years.
