ABSTRACT

The American football (AF) player requires a robust physical profile to thrive in the high-speed chaos that is “America’s Game.” However, within this chaos lies the formidable challenge of developing players for the unique physical demands native to each position. To do this, the strength and conditioning coach must have a detailed appreciation of the game and positional demands and be armed with an understanding of the general and specific training methods that can be used to develop players across a season and throughout their career. This chapter discusses how to effectively develop players and deploy the right training methods. Equipped with this information, readers will be able to develop individualized player plans that ensure everyone who steps on the field is “fit for purpose” and physically empowered to excel every time they play this great game.
