ABSTRACT

The two most salient meanings of Wu Wei concept for are intentional inaction and effortless action. The non-action in question is probably best described by Bruce Lee: Wu Wei is the art of artlessness, the principle of no-principle. To state it in terms of gung fu, the genuine beginner knows nothing about the way of blocking and striking, and much less of his concern for himself. But as soon as the training starts, he is taught how to defend and attack, and where to keep his mind, and many other technical skills-which make his mind 'stop' at various junctures. The purpose of therapist training is not to become the highest level of technician in the room, but to become the right person to be of service to other people. The therapist has the privilege of coming out on the far bank of their clients' experiences. The feelings are not a river to navigate but a life to live in.
