ABSTRACT

Through the use of the interaction of the water, boat, and passenger, as well as the bow, the archer, and the prize, Zhuangzi highlights the importance of creating personal freedom through a deeper understanding of one's self, emotions, fears, and abilities. Clinicians frequently encounter clients with limited ability to remain steadfast in the midst of chaos. Following down the same path of being motivated by loss, Zhuangzi employs the analogy of an archery contest. He demonstrates the significance of working toward something instead of being motivated by the fear of loss. Being an avid archer and hunter, the symbolism is both personal and powerful in how it highlights the intense concentration and mindful action that is required to hit the chosen target, regardless of the prize sought. Strengthening of the self negates the need for dependency and increases the ability for interdependency.
