ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the everyday life and experiences of children in Late Antiquity (c. 250–600 CE) in the Mediterranean area, focusing on specific themes of birth, socialisation and education, household relationships, religion, work, slavery and play. As much as possible it is the children’s perspective which is taken, in order to ask what children actually did in their everyday life, and what features characterised their lives? Special attention is paid to the factors of gender and socio-economic status.
