ABSTRACT

In environmental analysis, explanation of behavior may come from a number of individually fruitful and complimentary approaches. Photographic methods, typically using very wide angle lenses and 35mm slides, can survey and inventory the entire physical context of a setting or environment, and in addition can provide the details that emphasize particular aspects of significance. There is basic agreement that the so-called environmental design professions are in a state of rapid change. The system-wide design has limitations in relation to the study’s goals. Even a large sample provides rather thin coverage within a small environmental unit such as a cluster of city blocks which might constitute a neighborhood. The effects of the various environmental changes on the residential populations will be assessed through as wide a range of response measures as possible. The urban environment as used and perceived is an amorphous agglomeration of overlapping and changing spatial units.
