ABSTRACT

Since gaining independence in 1991, Kazakhstan has been reforming and internationalizing its higher education system. It has allowed the growth of private education institutions, encouraged study abroad, and set targets for cross-border institutional partnerships and faculty mobility. It has also fostered and financed the development of internationally oriented universities like Nazarbayev University (NU). Examining NU’s first years offers insights into the challenges and opportunities for recruiting and retaining international faculty.
