ABSTRACT

Mr. V.A.L. Mallet (Balliol), Secretary, gave the historical reasons for the birth ten years ago of the French Entente, at a time when an understanding with Germany was out of the question. Germany and France were in any case irreconcilable, and we were bound to choose between them. He welcomed the end of our traditional enmity with France, because of his intense admiration for that nation. His eulogy of the French people left us cold, but the speech was backed by sound knowledge and was of considerable merit.
