Although some Russians feared that war would result in revolution, most of those in government, as this recollection by Nicolas de Basily (of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) of a conversation with Hohenlohe (the Austrian military attaché in St Petersburg) shows, felt confi dent or preferred the risk over humiliation.
