ABSTRACT
Drawing on the work of Baron von Hügel and Louis Bouyer, this chapter will examine, as distinctive elements of Christian mysticism, the understanding of love rather than likeness as the key to the possibility of union with God, and the paradigmatic invocation of biblical figures, particularly within the liturgical context which most scholars now perceive to be presupposed in the works attributed to Dionysius the Areopagite.
