ABSTRACT

Epiphanius of Salamis and the author of the Refutation of all Heresies, sometimes attributed to Hippolytus, make no claim to be purveyors of a Christian philosophy and generally cite the philosophers only as sources for the pernicious teaching of heretics. They do not, however, profess to despise philosophy as a discipline, and deploy philosophical arguments against heretics. Their polemical methods sometimes reveal the influence of pagan antecedents, and “Hippolytus” in particular is an important transmitter of knowledge about the history of Greek thought which was lost to us before the rediscovery of his work.
