ABSTRACT

Hilary and Ambrose are the most illustrious bishops, as well as the foremost theologians, of the Latin church in the fourth century. This chapter will examine their attitudes to philosophy and their application of philosophical reasoning to the Trinity. Since both favoured Plato above any other thinker, a section will be devoted to the influence on both men of the Platonic tradition, inside and outside the church. The last section is devoted to their important and original contributions to the Christian understanding of human volition and agency.
