ABSTRACT
The issue of providence was ubiquitous and of capital importance in ancient Greek philosophy. This chapter, after reviewing the different concepts of deity entertained by the Greek schools, will go on to compare two pagan answers to the problem of evil, the demonological and the dualistic, before explaining the rise of Gnostic theories against this background. It will end with some remarks on the subsequent influence of Platonism on mainstream Christian thought.
