ABSTRACT

I have been ‘touched’ by my work at Manawanui Oranga Hinengaro Mental Health Services for MƗori in Auckland. Usually, when I mention I work there, psychology colleagues politely say: ‘Oh really? That’s interesting.’ The subtext is generally: ‘Why as a white would you work there? It’s a political mine eld, the service is usually bad, and by the way, they will eat you alive. Why with your seniority and reputation are you taking this risk? This is a career dead end.’ Of course, they don’t say this, because most are politically correct.
