ABSTRACT
I recently presented a spoken version of this chapter to a group of colleagues at a professional conference. I was overwhelmed with the response. Clinician after clinician came up to me to describe his or her own experience as patient, many of them traumatic, and thanked me for providing an opening for public discussion. I wished for a tape recorder to record as many stories as possible to begin sifting through the narratives that were being offered.
