ABSTRACT

The present research, part of a comprehensive, longitudinal study of a new children’s psychiatric hospital, is concerned with age-related differences in the use of space. Observations were made in identical house areas used by two different groups, one, ages 8 through 12, the other, 13 through 16. While the general types of activities in the house as a whole did not differ for the two age groups, the location of specific activities and the distribution of groups did differ. These differences were considered in terms of developmental differences in space use and their design implications.
