ABSTRACT

Research sought to determine the feasibility of increasing beneficial social contact between older people and young children and to identify physical features that will support such contact. An interview survey of 96 elderly residents of two age-segregated housing projects assessed their interest in contact with young children and identified features of proximity, conditions of privacy and location features that would encourage it. A set of scale models were used as a survey instrument. It appears feasible to plan for increased cross-generation contact in a wide variety of community settings. Three community planning strategies and several design implications are suggested.
