ABSTRACT

This research is designed to develop a methodology that can be used to determine the preferences of a population or subgroup within a population toward the attributes of different residential densities. The subgroups were selected on the bases of the stable characteristics of race, sex, and geographical location. Respondents reacted to groups of black and white photographs and recorded their reactions on a questionnaire presenting scaled values of various attributes of each housing density. The data was analyzed through the use of factor analysis and significance tests. This gave the underlying dimensions present in the respondent’s perception of different density environments depicted and the significant differences in perceptions for the different subgroups of the population itself.
