ABSTRACT

This chapter has been thoroughly revised to take account of rapid and ongoing developments in technology which bring new opportunities as well as challenges. The chapter begins with a discussion of clients’ rights to record sessions, including covert recording, then moves onto the usefulness of recordings for the purposes of supervision. It is argued that recordings provide opportunities for detailed review, multiple perspectives, removing doubts about competence, enhanced empathy, increased accountability, dispelling of myths and opportunities for concomitant research. The impact on clients and approaches to obtaining informed consent are explored. Exposing my work to a colleague can generate a sense of vulnerability. The chapter describes options for how to use the material in ways that acknowledge these sensitivities. The practicalities of different types of technology are discussed. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the use of remote live supervision and other technologies which can take place across borders and time zones, bringing into question territorial regulations regarding security.
