ABSTRACT

April 9, 2013, marked the 10-year anniversary of the toppling of Saddam Hussein’s

statue in Baghdad’s Firdos Square. The many re-circulations of some of the iconic

images from this event were accompanied by discussions of developments in Iraq after

its “liberation”. An early example of this was an article in the International Herald

Tribune on March 9, where the headline “10 Years After the Invasion of Iraq, a World of

Hurt” appeared over the image in Figure 1.
