ABSTRACT

The thread connecting the two interviews with the two essays in this section is their focus on both the creation, as well as content analysis of digital and new media sites aimed at, or overwhelmingly trafficked by women. The interviews discuss the challenges, triumphs, and thought process involved in creating web-based digital publications targeting specific groups of women: those who are feminist and those of African descent. The two essays use digital media as a relatively new source for content analysis in the service of understanding the cultural dynamics and implications of discussions of skin color or hue on Twitter in one essay, and how race and class impact the creation and dissemination of celebrity and fan culture in digital magazines and on fan sites in the second.
