ABSTRACT

The fi rst quote by U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson Lee, an African American woman and Democrat, and the second by Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Paul Ryan, a European American man and Republican, underscores deep ideological divides found across gender, racial and ethnic groups, and political parties. Yet, redistributive attitudes are complex, intersecting across identities and interacting with other beliefs. For example, the Democratic contenders for the 2016 presidential nomination defi ed traditional gendered trends of greater female support for redistribution with Bernie Sanders possessing a stronger record on these issues than front-runner Hillary Clinton.
