ABSTRACT
LGBT individuals living in Japan are faced with a variety of challenges at home, at school, in the workplace and in society as a whole. These challenges stem from the legal and social system based on the rigid gender binary and deep-rooted heterosexism. Recent laws and practices show some positive impact for LGBT individuals, but there are still many issues that need to be tackled from a human rights perspective.
