ABSTRACT

The 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster resulted in over 15,000 deaths and substantial economic, environmental and social setbacks that will continue for decades - effects large enough to divide Japan’s contemporary history into pre- and post-3/11. This chapter details the complexity of the nuclear disaster and its aftermath in terms of structural, health, community, economic and socio-psychological recoveries. Specifically, it focuses on the uncertain nature of the nuclear disaster and the ways in which residents of Fukushima have been coping with changed communities, social stigma, controversies surrounding nuclear power and future outlook.
