ABSTRACT

This chapter explains an approach to researching the needs and perceptions of older adults regarding the idea of the smart home. It investigates differences in attitudes towards and usage of smart devices between current older adults and the next generation of older adults. However, one of the problems of an ageing population is that a higher proportion of the population suffers from multi-morbidity – having two or more long-term medical conditions. One recent focus has been on the use of automation, robotics in general and humanoid robots. Some studies focus on the adoption of more comprehensive smart home technology by older adults. The study received the help of a sheltered/retirement homes provider, who emailed the link to the online questionnaire to their customers, giving the researchers an interesting insight into how to get responses from older adults using web technology.
