ABSTRACT

This chapter explores physical education planning that moves beyond the functional and examines a process that supports teachers to extend the possibilities for learning in physical education. It focuses on the work of J. Halbert and L. Kaser and H. Timperley. Kaser and Halbert in order to evidence how the Spiral of Inquiry (SoI) framework, alongside other educational frameworks, could be used to enhance learning in physical education and potentially shift the focus of learning and teaching to better meet the needs of all learners. The SoI approach can provide a clearer sense of what learning 'matters most' for the learners in teacher's context, and therefore becomes a useful platform for questioning the status quo that is a current physical education programme. As Timperley et al. highlight, "better outcomes for learners are a result of teachers and leaders acquiring new knowledge and developing new skills that lead to new actions".
