ABSTRACT

Individuals who suffer from eating disorders are often confronted with the reality of a long and costly journey to recovery. Outpatient therapy, which includes specialists such as a psychiatrist, physician, nutritionist, and psychotherapist, contributes to ongoing costs associated with recovery. For many, the costs of recovery are comparable to the costs associated with a college education from an esteemed private university in the United States. Providers of mental health care are also in a conundrum, as they are expected to be professionals, run their business by upholding the highest level of expertise through on-going training and education. The chapter presents the story about Rachel, in her mid-thirties who has had a long history of trauma; her trauma started in her early childhood at the hands of her father but extended to other family members in incestuous relationships. Rachel is on Medicaid for her psychiatric disorder and is considered disabled, unable to maintain reliable work outside of the church.
