ABSTRACT

In small higher education programs, often faculty have multiple roles with students, such as instructor, advisor, capstone/thesis chair, art therapy supervisor, or administrator. The intersection of these roles can easily give rise to ethical dilemmas. After evaluating the student’s response to the assignment, the Associate Dean agreed that the content of the student’s paper met a level of concern that warranted intervention. The Student Affairs Office did intervene, to help place the student on a Student Impairment Plan, which required the student to have a third party mental health and substance use/addiction evaluation. Art therapy faculty members often express difficulty in evaluating the artwork of art therapy students. Boundary setting with students, particularly challenged students, can pose ethical issues for faculty. Every art therapy program is a work in progress and every ethical dilemma that presents itself provides an opportunity for program improvement.
