ABSTRACT

Research on telemedicine indicates that: the provision of behavioral health care is one of the earliest healthcare specialties offered by telemedicine; the empirical base of telemental health consistently shows that diagnostic accuracy and treatment efficacy is equivalent to face-to-face for most populations and settings. This chapter illustrates the use of three apps: the Depression Anxiety Depression Scale, a measurement of depression, anxiety, and stress; pre-session summaries; and Paper 53, an App that can be used to draw, paint, and communicate in and between sessions. There are many telehealth companies, it is important to choose one that is Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act compliant, provides the necessary technology, offers management assistance, and provides customer support. While telehealth might not yet be a part of the therapist toolbox, it is clearly part of the digital future. Practice guidelines for telemedicine are important to ensure the effective and safe delivery of quality healthcare.
