ABSTRACT

Distinctive in the history of media ethics, there is today an aggressive search for universals. One strategy is to identify common values in journalism codes of ethics around the world. Also many theories of universals are being developed by philosophical reflection from both North and South. These approaches to global ethics yield three ethical principles: truth, human dignity, and nonviolence. Continued work is necessary because the technological revolution raises new problems for both theory and application. In addition, future research is needed to refine and develop theories that are balanced with time and space, preventive of harm to diverse cultures worldwide, and expressive of cross-cultural values. In the most advanced terms, ethics ought to be seen from the perspective of the whole universe rather than be strictly human-centered.
