ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of Indigenous methodologies beginning with the foundational premise that this approach is distinct and unique within qualitative research. It considers Indigenous methodologies begin with the understanding that this research approach is guided by Indigenous knowledge systems. This point is critical in understanding Indigenous methodologies. Words evoked when consider Indigenous methodologies include animistic, relational, collective, contextual and place-based, spiritual, holistic, experiential. Indigenous methodologies are grounded in one's own truth, story, and life. It is a grounding that is not divorced from community but rather assumes accountability to one's external world. This implies an understanding of reciprocity and respect from a deep ethical perspective. Indigenous methodologies require agility with story and an understanding of orality. Representations of knowledge allow for Indigenous symbology and ontology to emerge. Representations can be allegorical, metaphorical, and holistic. Interpretations are grounded within an Indigenous worldview and community relations. Indigenous methodologies are imbued with an Indigenous relational sensibility.
