ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the design of the quantitative study and to draw attention to some of the studies that have already been published from the data. It introduces the major sources of theory on which the quantitative approach builds. The chapter locates the empirical traditions of research among young people that have shaped the study. It clarifies the notions and levels of measurement employed in the study. The chapter discusses some of the established measures incorporated in the survey. It defines the ways in which the sample was structured. The scope of the Diversity project was subsequently extended to include other faith traditions through the Katz-Francis Scale of Attitude toward Judaism the Sahin-Francis Scale of Attitude toward Islam and the Santosh-Francis Scale of Attitude toward Hinduism. The quantitative component of the Diversity project was designed to be amenable to a range of statistical analyses, including multilevel linear models.
