ABSTRACT

This chapter reports data from group discussions with young people attending a large community school in inner London. It explores whether the school's ethos was reflected in the young people's views and attitudes regarding the multicultural composition of their school and whether they valued growing up in the kind of social context. The chapter revolves around the question whether the young people in the school considered religious diversity as being of personal and social value. It draws the profile and ethos of the school in terms of the characteristics that can be derived from documents, such as Ofsted reports, documents relating to the school and information available on the school's website. The chapter reports data from the group discussions, examining pupils' responses to the question of difference in relation to religion, their conversations about religion with their peers and family, how they related to values and their general attitudes to diversity.
