ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates how therapeutic qualities of cannabis continue to play a role by providing an analysis of Danish cannabis growers, who are experienced with recreational use, but whose current cultivation is mainly or partially motivated by their efforts to manage pain and illnesses of various sorts. It provides an outline of the history of medical use of cannabis with specific references to the Danish context. The chapter examines the medical reasons and conditions under which cannabis is grown and used. It explores contemporary understanding and knowledge of the therapeutic properties of cannabis from the perspective of current users. In Denmark and the whole of Scandinavia, knowledge about the therapeutic usage of cannabis-based drugs is scarce. The group who described their medical use as a way to handle neuropsychiatric and psychological disorders and emotional distress primarily mentioned that it helped them to suppress, reduce and/or manage depression/depressive symptoms, anxiety, panic attacks and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
