ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the current state of women in business in the United States. Although the advancement of women shows strong progress, there are many challenges to overcome in addition to great accomplishments. The chapter begins by introducing a current profile of women in the workforce and trends over the past ten years. It explores the progress of women in education, management and entrepreneurship. The chapter examines legislation supporting women in management and current initiatives supporting employed women. It explores future avenues for progress of women in the workforce. For women and men, the higher a person's educational achievements, the more likely they employed. The increasing proportions of women in management, women business owners and women holding political office, the types of leadership styles that women exhibit is of great interest to organizations and society alike. The most important act of legislation for women that came out of the US civil rights movement was the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
