ABSTRACT

Leaving the market town of Kola that sits off the main highway leading into Ukambani, we snaked upward along the unpaved trails into Watema, shielding our mouths from the dust with our scarves. It was early morning during the dry season and we passed women carrying fruits and vegetables uphill, children playing in the grass, and young men leading donkeys up from the river. I was traveling on the back of a pikipiki (motorbike, used as a taxi) to the weekly meeting of Watema Farmers Self-Help Group, a mixed sex self-help group that was dedicated primarily to learning innovative agricultural techniques.
