ABSTRACT

This chapter examines higher education provision in Postwar Sierra Leone, its goals, strategies and structures and proposes recommendations for its contribution to developing and sustaining a culture of peace. It focuses on how the universities and other forms of tertiary educational institutions could reinvent themselves to respond to the new challenges: socio-economic, development and political, aggravated by the ever increasing pressures of neo-liberal globalization. The chapter also examines brief history of formal education in Sierra Leone with a view to examining the original role of tertiary and other forms of higher education. It also examines recent developments and changes in higher education provision. The chapter proposes a role for higher education in promoting and maintaining a culture of peace in post-conflict Sierra Leone. It argues that despite its gate-keeping mechanisms, the role of tertiary educational institutions is central to promoting poverty alleviation, developing and sustaining peace in Sierra Leone.
