ABSTRACT
I begin in China, where in the past two decades there has been the most substantial development of universities ever seen in any country. A little-noticed aspect of this has been a considerable expansion of the study of religions. During visits to China, in which I have given lectures and seminars on the study of religions in universities, I have been struck by how Chinese academics and public offi cials regard this expansion as obviously sensible.
