ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts covered in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book is a place where people learn what contributors in their field do and how several of them have effectively influenced the organisations and got them to incorporate users into product design and development processes. People hear how they convinced decision-makers in the organisations that listening to, watching and interacting with ordinary people as they attempt to use the creations increases acceptance of new technologies and helps the organisation achieve its financial goals. It discusses organisational factors that facilitated or impeded the application of usability engineering to the problem. The success of most initiatives can usually be traced back to the efforts of the natural liaisons as they communicated across discipline boundaries, forged relationships and shared understandings, and consistently went beyond the tasks depicted in their job descriptions.
