ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the case study of flagship projects in selected European cities from the 1990s to the present day. The discourses of key stakeholders or actors: politicians, architects and urban/regional planners are analysed to test if a coherent message exists among them and to show if the discourses seek to increase the symbolism of the monumentality. Territorial impact is the whole material and immaterial effects produced at diverse scales on spaces socially constructed and appropriated by the population. The National Library of France (BNF) was the last Parisian "Grand Projet" promoted by the former French President: Franois Mitterrand. The City of Culture of Galicia (CdCG) is a project composed of six buildings promoted and financed by the Autonomous Community of Galicia. The City of Arts and Sciences (CAC) of Valncia is an architectural complex financed by the Autonomous Community of Valncia and, like the Galician project; building has been stopped due to the economic crisis.
