ABSTRACT

This chapter considers local productive arrangements (LPAs) as "local agglomerations of economic, political and social agents, focused on a specific set of economic activities, working in conjunction". Complementarily, the so-called local productive systems (LPSs), representing more systematic methods, with a higher level of interdependence among the agents, are defined as productive systems whose interdependence, articulation and consistent ties result in interaction, cooperation and learning. The chapter focuses on local productive arrangements, as opposed to systems (LPSs), as the first are a better reflection of the situation of the productive agglomerations to be studied, which are, as of yet, in an initial stage of organization, without consistent coordination among the members and other local institutions. The chapter intends to fill the gap of studies on local productive arrangements (LPAs) and their social organization, and hence proposes a Social Technology (ST) for Mobilization of Local Productive Arrangements, based on the concept of social capital.
